Update, September 2015

Dear Super Supporters,S 2015 The Big Kids
School has begun and we are charging ahead with renewed enthusiasm and prayers for more creativity.   In preschool through sixth grades we have 25 precious lives that come bouncing in every morning full of expectation.  Through our affiliate in Quito, we have “tutoring” classes for grades 7 though 10.
Normally our graduating students want to go to the “big” kid schools, so they leave us to learn what the world has to offer.  The last couple of years there has been little or no interest in Junior High here in Tambo.  This year, the Lord did something surprising.  On the first day of class, we had 12 former students registered for 7th through 10th grades, all of them back on their own volition.  I took special time the first day of class to have each one come forward and explain what they desired from their studies with SEA LA LUZ. S 2015 Ginny and 4th gr
Almost all of them sited a yearning to walk closer to God and know His Word.  I was brought to tears.  After 12 years of pouring into little lives, God let me see the harvest in hearts of teenagers that will turn their world to seek the Kingdom.  A new song that will be one this year´s theme songs says: “I know who I am, who God says I am, what He says I am, where He says I´m at.”  These kids have seen the world and know what they must do to push forward into their destiny.  Praise God with us.
S 2015 Making memoriesWe would like to introduce you to our extremely necessary new teacher Ginny Strickler.   She is from Washington, has her masters degree and worked a few years in the school system in the Tri-Cities.  She has taken on the job of teaching English, math, robotics and piano to the Junior Highers.  Bless her.  She also helps with our small fourth grade class in English and math.  What a blessing to have her here.  Please pray with us that her visa papers will be able to be processed soon so she can stay the year.
In this update, I would like to present to you an opportunity to touch a life that needs God´s direction and protection.   As I was contemplating how to put this before you, the Lord had me read Exodus 25:1-2.   “Then the Lord spoke to Moses saying, ´Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring Me an offering.  From everyone who gives it willingly with his heart you shall take My offering.´”   Student sponsors are needed this year.  The finances are necessary, but specifically, the prayers brought before the Father on behalf of the child affect their lives in more ways than we know.  There have been some awesome sponsors of our kids; but I will briefly share two recent stories.S 2015 Making cookies
14 years ago, Lizbeth´s mother would spit at us when we would walk past her.  She threatened me with physical harm when I invited the 3 year-old Lizbeth to an evangelism program we held that year in Tambo.  The priest had warned her to have nothing to do with the Christians and she was following his law to the letter.  When Liz was 4, we started the school in the village.  If I could have understood the Spanish, I´m sure my hair would have frizzed by how the mother scorned the effort.  Lizbeth went to the public school down the valley about 5 miles away where the teacher physically and verbally abused the child.  The next year, Lizbeth and her mother were at the door of God´s school looking for a spot in Kindergarten.  Over the next few years, the tension that the mother brought with her was tangible but the little girl was soft to the things of God.
About seven years ago, a dear sister in the Lord came down with a workteam from New York, saw Lizbeth and asked to be her sponsor.   I believe the faithful prayers Alona offered on behalf of Liz touched the Father and caused the mother´s heart to change.  This same woman who once reviled me and the school, became our biggest supporter.  Studies were always a struggle for Lizbeth, but she knew someone was specifically praying for her, who wrote her letters and encouraged her.  Her years of study with us went through 9th grade – a total of eleven years.  Alona, her sponsor, kept the relationship going until Liz went to a public high school last year.  Once a student goes into the world we see how deep the seed went into the spirit.
I stopped by to visit with Lizbeth´s mother last week.  She was more joyful than I have ever seen her.  She beamed at me as she shared that Lizbeth had passed all of her subjects the year before and when they went in to register for 11th grade, the administration congratulated the mother on her well-behaved daughter and diligent student.   This mother, who cannot read, blessed me and blessed me again for the school and opportunity it gave her child to walk in her destiny.  I reminded the mom that it was God Who helped Lizbeth get through and the prayers of Alona.  With a heart full of gratitude, the mother acknowledged both God and the prayer supporter saying that Alona´s photo was prominent on the livingroom mantel.   Praise God.
A short-term but dramatic support story is of Esteban.  Last year was Esteban´s third year with the school and he was in second grade, extremely intelligent and extremely angry.  He lived with his maternal grandparents in the village while the distant but real friction between his parents caused him great grief.  Esteban was constantly fighting, irritating, or disrupting.  He had asked Jesus to be His Savior but his need for love and his anger were overwhelming him.  In 2014, we met and connected with a wonderful couple in North Carolina.  The Wong Family asked to sponsor a child and the Lord put Esteban on my heart. Even though his parents could pay the tuition, I knew that Esteban needed the prayer support that this family would give him.  After about five months of being covered with love and prayer, Esteban changed almost overnight.  He was calm, attentive, loving and spiritually perceptive.  Everyone in the school noted (and commented) on the change.
Esteban´s grandparents moved out of the village in July and have taken Esteban with them.  They were very profuse in their gratitude for the emotional peace the Lord wrapped around the child.  We continue to pray for the seed of the Word of God to grow into a strong, victorious, young warrior for the Kingdom.
How do you become a sponsor?  Let us know your desire via e-mail.  We ask the school parents to donate $10 a month to give them a vested interest.  It costs the Mission about $100 a month to teach each child.  That is $1000 a year.  “From everyone who gives it willingly with his heart you shall take My offering.”   Whatever the Lord puts in your heart to give is wonderful, but it is your prayers and encouragement that the children need.  Partner with us to propel children into their destiny.
A sincere thank you to those who are so faithful in supporting us both in prayers and gifts.  We thank our Lord regularly for you, our team members.  S 2015 Making plans...

Update, July 2015

Dear Celebrating Saints,
Another school year has ended – the 12th year of the school.  What an adventure these years have been.  Four young warriors finished their sixth grade year last week but all have decided to continue with us under the distance learning umbrella of our affiliate in Quito.  2015 Jul The GraduatesThe parents and the children realize that the protective, focused training the students receive with us is necessary before launching into the harsh world.  We were blessed to have the parents´  sincere thanks and confidence during the reportcard conferences.  Praise God for how He is working through the children to affect the families. 2015 Jul Kingdom Warriors
2015 Jul End of Year Program  We do not know how many children we will have in the fall but we would like you, our encouraging friends, to ask the Lord if you are to be a prayer/financial supporter for one of these precious lives.   Your faithful prayers for a child will help them through the difficult times most of them face on a daily basis.  Training warriors for the Kingdom is a group effort.  God releases so much more wisdom, protection and blessings when His saints pray in agreement.  Please let us know if the Lord is directing you to join with us in this way.
Ministry opportunities are always before us – most are a result of a Divine surprise.   In late May, one of our helpers, Marcia, a young widow with two children, asked if I would please do a Bible Study with her and her extended family.  With one of our teachers, Ruth, we have begun a deep, soul-searching study of repentance, cleansing and freedom.  After 6 weeks, the group now numbers 10 adults.  It is my plan to hand this study to Ruth so she can grow in the spiritual leadership role that God has destined her to walk in.   A month ago, another young mother in the village became a widow.  God´s surprise was that her local family asked that we come on a regular basis to pray for and encourage her.  With Marcia and Ruth, we have started a healing time with the widow on an individual basis; but from the hunger in the extended family, I believe this will grow as well.
2015 Jul Unexpected VisitorA rather odd ministry opportunity literally stumbled into our village and to our home in mid-June.  Mark, an Englishman, was winding his way alone on horseback from Columbia to Peru when his horse suddenly pulled up lame at the entrance of our very obscure road.  He suddenly needed a place for his horse to recuperate and for him to stay and we could provide both.  Mark´s hunger for God, truth and understanding of the concept of destiny was amazing.  2015 Jul Mark teaching EnglishHe listened, absorbed and reveled in what we did at school as well as being part of our family for almost three weeks.  He could not get enough of our prayer times and nightly blessings.  Many seeds were planted; we pray they sprout soon and bear much fruit.
Mark´s goal for the ride is to visit small foundations in the Andean countries to offer them positive public exposure of their foundation´s work via his webpage and Facebook blog.   Through his pre-travel campaign to raise funds and interest for his trip he has garnered several thousand followers.  Although he had no idea we existed, God wanted Mark to be touched in a dramatic way and in turn, release SEA LA LUZ to a totally new audience.   Amazing.
2015 Jul Mudslide in OyacachiFinally, God had Dave and I participate in a community donation effort for a neighboring village called Oyacachi.   Last week, after the children were out of school, God allowed a slow-moving, six-lane wide river of mud, boulders, tree-trunks and debris to cover a major section of the village, including the elementary school and over 20 homes.  In His mercy, no one was killed or injured.  Our Tambo families immediately began gathering what we could to encourage and help those who lost their earthly possessions.  We were blessed by our people and the help that came from many other sectors of the area.
Many blessings to you, dear Warriors.  We appreciate your comments, news, encouragement and most of all your prayers.

Update, May 2015

2015 May Blessing IsraelDear Saints Anticipating Pentecost,
Sunday is Pentecost!  At school this week we have been spending time in listening prayer every day to hear what God would say to us about attitude, plans and offerings.  The events of Pentecost in the Bible focused on SOUND and the WORD.  God thundered and His Voice issued the ten commandments from Mt. Sinai; a SOUND roared through Jerusalem and the Edgar Pentecost 2015tongues of fire released the 120 faithful to proclaim the WORD of Salvation to the multitudes.  We have been listening for the sounds from heaven and His Voice to give us directions.  We are intently praying for God´s purifying fire to roar through us and Tambo.   The children´s joyful firstfruits offering lit-up the eyes of their Heavenly Father and brought tears to mine.
2015 May Pentecost OfferingsIn our last update, I mentioned that a dear saint from Texas came down for a week at our request to help at the school.  Klancy works with children and is gifted in helping the kids recognize what God is saying and verbalize what they hear.  She worked several days with our children in taking the obvious things around them, asking God what it means to them, and then speaking it out as a declaration or blessing.
2015 May Equipping the Teachers      God shows me, Sharman, a person´s emotional state so I can pray and prophesy healing into them; God shows Klancy a person´s gifts so she can give them God´s counsel and direction.  She, Kjersti and I went to our high school affiliate in Quito one day to pray for the Director, Maria, and whomever else God would put in our path.  This is a distance learning institution that does not have scheduled classes but open rooms with teachers available to answer questions and give tests.  The students come and go at random.  Many of Maria´s students have been rejected from public schools, or rejected by parents and are running on the edge.  The kids come to this school because they WANT an education to have an opportunity to succeed.
Many of the staff had been alerted and were waiting for us. We entered one classroom with an eager teacher and six unsuspecting students.  One young man was by himself, head down and headphones on, trying to ignore us.  Klancy began to pray and speak into each one and I grabbed the young man with the headphones and told him he could not escape.  Klancy told him he was a leader, to which all of the students and staff agreed and giggled nervously.  Later, Maria confirmed that Brian is a gang leader and evidently well-known.  Klancy spoke godly counsel and revelation into his life.2015 May Prophets to the World
The highlight of Klancy´s stay was a visit to an indigenous church about 45 minutes away.  The pastor was blest to have us come and minister to his flock after the service.  We took five teens, graduates of our school, with us to pray with the people.  The meeting was sweet and the Holy Spirit flowed through the ministry time in a powerful way. Everyone was really surprised to be prayed for with such insight and Godly revelation by our young people.  God is raising up a generation of movers and shakers for the Kingdom – hallelujah!
2015 May Gods Word for a FriendWe praise God for His divine timing of Klancy´s visit and the catalyst she was in taking all of us to a higher level of moving in the things and understanding of God.
Last month, we wrote about Pastor BJ Stavness´ visit to officiate at Erland and Mayra´s wedding and then lead in the wonderful time of baptism in our village.  Almost immediately following, Klancy came down to be the inspiration to take more territory for God´s Kingdom.   Although it was a stretch for us to have events so close together, I knew this was   God´s plan to drop us into a new arena – again.
For the last few years, I have had the desire to start a Bible study at Maria´s school but one must wait for God´s timing.  After Klancy´s visit,  He opened the door.  Good-bye to my limited, preconceived ideas, hello to God´s strategies and hanging on to His hand for dear-life.
2015 May Ministering to AdultsWe offer a basic English language class as part of Maria´s curriculum.  Usually two of us make the hour and a half trip into Quito, teach an hour, share and pray with Maria for a while and then drive home.  On April 15th, our neat little routine changed.  Carrie and I arrived early that day and Maria informed us of a new law from the Ministry of Education.  Now, every school MUST start their day with an inspirational message (20 minutes) of values and morals!   How great is that!  God prepared the way and we ran through that door really fast.  We started class and told the kids that the new law mandated a spiritual inspiration moment and we would be giving a devotional every week before class for those that were interested.  The holy presence of God filled the room immediately!  I began to share with the 15 kids that were on time how precious they are and how much God has planned for each one.  They sat with amazing hunger in their eyes drinking in every word.  I told them that if they wanted prayer we would meet them after class.
Carrie and I left class and met two boys who were waiting in nervous anticipation.  One was Brian, the gang leader Klancy prayed over, and the other is his second in command (Alex).  Lonely, fearful boys looking for someone to trust and believe in.   We went to a quiet place where the boys sat listening to everything I had to say – how precious they are to God and that He has a destiny for each one.  They both wiped away tears.  The Lord then prompted me to explain the plan of salvation so they would have the help and strength they needed to change.  They agreed to take the step and read the sinner´s prayer.  What rejoicing there was in heaven!  Carrie´s comment was she was amazed that  they respected me so much that they made no move to leave nor showed disinterest.  I hugged them tightly and they hugged back.  We had not even started the “Bible Study” but the harvest began.  Not by might, nor by power but by HIS Spirit.
The next week was our first prepared-for devotional time.  I prayed and decided to take a boom-box and wild music to start the spiritual inspiration time. The boom-box would not cooperate, the music did not seem to fit and it did not feel like a success. However, the Lord´s presence came into the room anyway and the dozen kids that were there, listened intently to what the Lord had to say to them. It was tremendous.  I have decided I am not afraid to do whatever He tells me to do even if it appears it might fail or I will be “humiliated”.  I must be dead to myself and alive in Christ.
The first of April, Maria complained to me that her students were not applying themselves to their studies, they did not care, they were not finishing anything or taking tests – general blah.  Then we started the devotional.  Neither the “Values Class” nor the English Class are compulsory. We post a large sign that states what time each starts. The first two weeks of the devotional class we had a dozen kids that came and listened attentively, including at least six tough boys. The Lord had me pull two girls and two gang leaders out of the English class that followed to pray individually over them. The girls wept and the one young man drank it in.  After those two sessions, Maria told me there was a notable difference in her students´ attitude and study activities (the atmosphere had changed).
Now the devotional time is the rage!  Kjersti and I are in awe – cuz it sure ain´t us.  The kids came early this week to get a seat and there were over 30 that listened to what God wanted to tell them.  The most amazing part was that at the end of English class, about eight young men were persistently waiting outside the door for the test-takers to leave.  When only one older student was left, Brian and Alex pushed their way into the room leaving their buddies outside, loudly saying they wanted to see what English exams they needed to take, and they closed the classroom door.   Since Alex has taken almost all of the tests and Brian has not come to even one English class, I was a bit suspicious.  So, while Kjersti talked to and prayed with the last test-taker, I sat with the two gang-leaders to find out what they REALLY wanted.  What they REALLY wanted was MORE PRAYER!!   They are desperate.  Brian has the saddest look in his eyes.  Kjersti and I prayed protection and growth so they can truly be the godly leaders the Lord wants them to be. Who would have thought?  Do we know what we are doing?  Not a clue – we are out of our element with young adult street kids.  But we can preach, share, love them and pray, and use the gifts God has put within us for His honor and glory.  Does God know what He´s doing?  Absolutely.  It is so obvious that the Holy Spirit is drawing these souls into His Kingdom and not man.  We know that what HE starts He will be faithful to bring it to completion – the harvest!2015 May What is God Saying
The Harvest, pray for THE Harvest,  Pentecost is coming!! Thank you and we pray you have a blessed time rejoicing in the Lord this weekend.

Update, April 2015

Dear Passing Over Saints,2015Apr The Waiting Bride
The season of Passover this year for us was intense, multi-faceted and awesome.  We trust you also left the old season behind and passed through in resurrection power into the next phase of your destiny.
Our long-awaited answer to prayer was Mayra´s “green card” visa for the USA as Erland´s wife.  Praise God the visa came in March and a week later they celebrated with a beautiful wedding here in Ecuador.  As radical Jesus-followers, the couple wanted their ceremony to portray the coming of Jesus for His Bride, the Church.  The program was, like most of what our family does, out-of-the-ordinary.
Since the Church is waiting for the Groom, the bride came down the aisle first in great anticipation for the love of her life.  Then the groom came in joy and confidence, dancing, jumping and cartwheeling to a righteous beat to claim the love of his life. 2015Apr Joyful Groom Think about it.  Jesus, the Lover of our souls, will undoubtedly come for us with unrestrained joy, dancing to the music of the Throneroom after waiting milleniums for this event.  Watching Erland come for Mayra took us out of confining traditional thinking into the realms of heaven.   Oh, what joyful love Jesus has for us, His Bride.  It was a Passover moment.
2015Apr Swept Away2015Apr Ministering to ParentsMy brother, Pastor BJ Stavness, came to officiate the happy occasion and stayed for a week afterward.  During those days, he ministered and prayed over the children and their parents, speaking life and encouragement into their lives.  We visited a few homes in Tambo to pray over heads of families and bless their dwelling places.  BJ´s stay culminated in a baby dedication service and baptisms.  Our options for locations were the glacier-fed river or the volcanic hot pools… hmmm.
2015Apr The Joy of the Lord
With Dave filming video, Carrie taking photos, Kjersti translating and BJ and myself ministering, we were blest to dedicate two precious babies to the Kingdom, with words of direction and encouragment for the mothers.  Ten precious souls of children and parents from the school were baptized, presenting their lives before the Lord in a public demonstration of leaving the old behind and rising up into a new Christ-centered way of thinking and living.  Again, the joy of the Lord overwhelmed us so we laughed and rejoiced with His kids coming into greater fullness.  As an observation of the three weeks following their decisive moment, we have seen the two moms literally shed their sackcloth for garments of peace, confidence and focus on destiny.  The 15-year-old girl has come up a couple of levels in her prophetic gifting and 13-year-old José, has had a complete change of attitude which has even transformed his eyes and face.  It was a Passover moment for our people.
2015Apr Hotpool BaptismsDuring the weekend of Resurrection Sunday, Kjersti and I were able to attend a tremendous Passover conference in Texas where Kjersti was again asked to translate for the Spanish speaking attendees.  At the end of the conference a dear sister-in-Christ came with us back to Ecuador, but that adventure will be exciting news for our next update.
Thank you again for your faithful prayer and financial support for what God is doing here in His corner of Ecuador.  We so appreciate you, your love, encouragement and sacrifice.   Know that we pray for you and the USA as well.

Update, February 2015

Dear Encouraging Saints,

We trust you have been walking in and experiencing the amazing grace of God this last month.   Our eyes have been opened to see His hand more and more in the outpouring of His mercies and great grace over us and the school/mission.   Praise God!

We would like to share the joyous news that Carrie Dotson, our short-term missionary from Washington, was civilly married here to a great man of God and they will have their church wedding in the States in May. Because Marco wants to stay in Ecuador, this means that Carrie will be available to continue helping at the school next year – yahoo!

Remember the events of December with the SOUND of praise going forth from the children of the school? God continued the story in January!Hidden treasures Feb 2015

Over the holidays, I began to pray that God would use the praise of the children in more ways and places. I asked for unsolicited invitations to sing and dance. God answered. The children’s song on the radio and for the authorities so touched people that as soon as Christmas break was over, a delegation from the County again came up to the school (in the rain, mud, and cold with nice shoes and suits) to ask if we would please consider participating in the major kick-off program for the County Fair the 8th of January. Clarifying that it was not a celebration of the patron idol but of the county itself, I knew this was an answer to my prayer. I asked that we be allowed to sing more than one song and that we be first to perform to prepare the atmosphere. The authorities agreed.

We diligently prepared three songs, and while I was sure of the Christian Kichwa praise dance I was uncertain which one of the other two He had chosen. As I was praising and worshiping in our house the morning of the program, over the web cast came the song from the heart of the Father. Of all the songs that could have been played on the web that morning, God made my decision by playing the song we were to present. Filled with confidence and joy that this was to be an awesome program, we arrived to participate in a parade before the main event.

Complete with make-shift floats the parade had at least thirty different entries representing many schools and a multitude of special interest groups. Hundreds of people gathered to add to the noise, color and excitement. I wondered if our protected, secluded, and obviously the poorest children in the affair would go on stimulus overload. The peace that passes understanding covered us.

The mayor, his highest ranking staff, the beauty queens from the different villages, reporters for the press and judges were on one side of the open-air former basketball court while most of the crowd watched from the other three sides. What with the drizzle, puddles, loose gravel and wandering children, the cement base made for an interesting stage. Our kids had only practiced on a smooth, polished wooden floor under controlled conditions – and today? Deep breath. This was God’s victory, His day, He set it up, He would be glorified.

We were the third of the 20 or so groups to perform but had to follow an elementary school group of about 75 children who danced, offered sacrifices and worshiped the condor. Kjersti became physically ill. I watched horror and disbelief grow on the faces of our 15 little warriors around me as the understanding of what was being done sank in. To the teachers I issued the command to pray for angels and cleansing of the atmosphere. Audible thunder sounded in the heavens in response to our prayers. It was time for the Light to shine.

Praise dance Feb 2015Not knowing the protocol that each group was supposed to give the MC a short introduction of the presentation, the 5 third and fourth graders with their teacher ran into position to dance before the Lord with Kichwa music and language. By God’s hand, the CD they used started with the clear clarion reading of verses in Nehemiah calling for the people to praise the Lord. A perfect introduction. In their native dress and joyful smiles on the their faces these children confidently twirled, jumped and skipped through a four-minute routine with the knowledge that they had been born to dance for the Lord.

Although superbly done, native dances are common at the County Fair so the crowd was only somewhat touched. The five dancers were then joined by the rest of our group for the song the Lord had chosen. The title of the song is “You are the God of Hope” written and sung by Glory of Zion International but the Spanish version has rewritten some of the lyrics. The words of the chorus are:

You are the God of hope, You are the God of justice,

You are the God Who listens, You are my Savior.

God of Hope Feb 2015For five and a half minutes, silence covered the area as the words of hope rang out and our children, ages 6 to 12, brilliantly executed totally foreign choreography to the honor of God. The finale is the group dropping to their knees in worship while a white banner with red letters, JESUS, is lifted high. No one moved. I was told later by a school father who was on a different street, that the town was quiet, listening to the words of the song that echoed over the loud speakers.

After a few hushed moments, we quickly left the stage for the next group. However, the MC, Luis, the same man who set-up the radio program, reverently announced to the crowd that these songs were presented for the honor and glory of Jesus Christ and Him alone. Our school was not competing for the best presentation. Wow. Public acknowledgement of the Savior. Amazing grace.Lift up His Name Feb 2015

Praise, pray, listen for His leading, present ourselves as living sacrifices to Him, obey and watch Him use us as Lights to those who dwell in darkness. His great grace covers us!
